Tentatively Scheduled for July 5-July 26, 2006
Monday –Wednesdays 8:30 AM-3:30 PM
Thursdays 8:30-12:00
WHAT IS IT? The EMWP is an intensive, by invitation only, Summer Institute that focuses on three related activities: (1) teachers refining and demonstrating their most successful method for using writing in their teaching (2) reading and discussion of current theory and research in the teaching of writing and thinking; (3) practice in writing.
The EMWP is based on the premise that the best teachers of teachers are other teachers. We prepare teachers to serve as curriculum leaders who provide professional development for their colleagues through in-service and conference presentations. Teachers must apply and be accepted to the Institute before enrolling. Upon receipt of your application and recommendation letter, a representative of the EMWP will contact you to arrange an interview.
WHO SHOULD GO? Teachers of all disciplines and grade levels who want to learn more about the teaching of writing are encouraged to apply to the EMWP Summer Institute. It is not only for language arts teachers! The EMWP also provides a supportive environment for teachers to further develop their own writing.
WHAT’S THE COST? This course is worth 6 graduate credits. Tuition and fees apply. In the event that your district does not fully reimburse you for expenses (most reimburse only for tuition), limited scholarships and funds are available. See http://www.mansfield.edu/~accounts/summer.cfm for complete information on fees and tuition for the summer sessions at MU. Scholarship applications will be made available during your interview and all funds will be allocated promptly after the scholarship application deadline. Textbooks will be provided free of charge.
WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT? In addition to the Institute, selected teachers must attend a Saturday orientation meeting on April 22, 2006, and a post-institute meeting during the following school year. The tentative schedule for the Summer Institute is listed above. Those who successfully complete the Institute must be willing to present at one or more professional development in-service dates organized by the EMWP, either in their own or surrounding districts. Numerous EMWP 2005 fellows have also gone on to present at state or national conferences w/EMWP support.
